To be honest, I was disappointed. I waited for this for a month, only to have it delayed for a month. The hype was big about this supposed "big name" podcaster. Turns out he is (and this is not an affront to him) a middling sort of podcaster. But hey, whatever. Then came the big promise of a story by this guy. Okay. I'm stupid, I bite again. The story is interesting enough but it left too much open. Yeah, I know, 30 mins. is a short time to tell a story fully. However, Serling, whom you are obviously (tring) to imitate managed it and I would expect the same of anyone trying to do this. However, you didn't come close. You tried, you failed. Its as simple as that. Sorry to be critical but (and this is only an opinion here) there were several problems with the script and story:
First, the 'board to the head' beginning with the charted explanation left little to the imagination. It should have been left to be revealed in the body of the story, which it later was. But the preemptive strike at the beginning gave the whole work a 3rd grade, flow chart, explain everything mentality.Second, story wise, what was the big deal with the aliens. Yes, we (humanity) had been being duped for a couple of thousand years, but big whoop. Its not like they were a danger to anyone. Did they cause ill effects on the human race? Did people die because of this? Wheres the horror? The threat? What would have been better would be to ask the bigger questions? Were these creatures collectively God? They were asked but left dangling as if to say, " we don't know what it is, its not hurting anyone, lets kill it." What was the reason. Thirdly, more realistic dialog and less preachiness. The purpose for inventions speech was very contrived. The dialog was stiff and struggling at times. People don't talk like text books, genius' don't tend to prattle (they do ramble). I should know, I worked with a number over the years. Now for the filming. Lighting issues. Shakey camera work at times (Oddly well handled part of the time), and some actors who were terrible unsuited. The main priest was good, the second priest too young, Gordo just irritating and weakly acted, as though he were strung out on twinkies and going through puberty. The ending was vague and took no chances and the whole device felt 'stuffed'. I will give you points for effort. You are at least doing something. The effects were truly great. But it all just felt contrived. And I am sorry to be so harsh. But don't promise what you can't deliver or modify what you claim to be. Honesty over vanity, which is what this project seems to be dedicated. I will say this, I have a couple of friends who turned me on to this who really liked it. I too think it has potential. But on this episode, it was squandered and crippled. Better plotted out scripts and a little more in the way of directing and I think you may have something. Otherwise, I will be skeptical, not that it should matter to you. Keep plugging and remember its easy to set on this side, but it can be liberating and freeing to do so. You laid it open for commentary and opinion. Here is just one. Future good fortune. KVS
Can u please send me the script on my mail? i love the scenes:) nice script;)
George,
Visit http://www.simplyscripts.com/tv.html and read the script (courtesy of Earl hisself) of “Sins of the Mother”.
I have a new idea for you, this is as mind bending as the prayer leeches
Why do I enjoy these updates SO MUCH !!?
nice intro graphics and photograph. The exposition with the drunk is dreadfully long, there was no reason for it. The soundtrack is very good. The compression causes a buzz in both systems I listened through when people are not talking. At the end, the angel should saw his lines like he is confused, with a question at the end.
Very nice.
Thank you.
butter
Did you really need to make a movie about a computer animattion program? Intro graphics good pacing,(done by someone else I suppose) but, are you trying to make a political statement, or sell the computer animation program? Why do you show it twice and why is it so slow, especially when it is just two cells? The intro credits are deadly slow too. Whoever your friend is who is doing the graphics, I guess Joseph I. Fagan, is going to keep you all in the bush league. Get a professional who cares about the final cut, not their part. You need to reedit this one or Fagan’s dull work will be the anchor that weisghs you down. There is no room in the big time for people who let the mediocre weigh them down. I imagine he has a big ego. And the director needs the stones to cut and edit. Too bad. The rest of it was good. Good sound.
Very nice way to start the series. This is a fun little way to let you know you will be seeing some smart sci-fi and not just a “boo I’m a scary monster” type of show. Very polished.... Scott’s cameo is quite funny and David made me believe he was guy sitting on pew. You are on to something.
Well done. The sound was a little odd in places but that will only smooth itself out over time. This was a very fun little episode. I was reminded of one of the better episodes of Amazing Stories. Nice balance between humor and the dark edges of the story. I hope Carl and his bride have a happy life together.
With this episode you have a nice stride going. What I thought was going to be a Gattaca like story was more than I expected it to be. A mindless system with no room for observation of rules is quite scary. I was so cheering for the doc for doing the right thing that I was taken by surprise by how it all ended. The patient’s explanation at the begining sounded so natural as if she was speakign to a friend. Very nice payoff.
Having seen all the episodes including Latchkeepers (Cause I WAS THERE) this is easily my favorite. This is the best Neil Gaiman story not written by Neil that I have seen. Such a simple yet epic story which is all about people. Warmth, heart, humor… this has it all. I even cheered at the end. Nice work gang!
Latchkeepers is coming.. and it is AWESOME!
Thanks for the great show. People like you prove that great SciFi shows and short episodes can be produced and made by normal people with great ideas like you are.
I was always waiting and dreaming for such show, somewhat reminisce of the 60s and 80s twilight zone in a way but still new and intriguing. I can tell I loved all of the already released episodes and I am pretty much sure I would love the next one.
Choosing the Internet as a media to spread your work is the most generous and wonderful thing you can do. I, living in Eastern Europe, would have never seen it or even heard of it was not for the Internet.
I have and would recommend your show to every SciFi fan I know and meet in the future here in our small country and outside when I am travelling.
Once again thank you for the great work and congratulations for the TV airing.
I loved this. Very good production for the budget you guys have. Although I do agree a couple of things could have been fixed. Like for example: When the cultist meets with the priest for the second time. I think throwing the box to the floor was a little too much, and sort of ruined the tension and suspense a little bit.
Anyways great idea great acting, I’ll watch the next episodes and tell all my friends about it.
What more is there to say- this is amazing stuff. And as a NZer my heart warmed to hear the Kalypto likes rugby. You’re getting the success you all deserve. Congrats.
I feel guilty asking this as this is a free show but when does the next segment air? I was rather surprised how short the segmant was and bearing in mind how long the gaps have been in the past it kind of kills the spirit of things a bit.
Awesome stuff. always love these. :D
No problem, Doug. In the PDF it explains it better, but basically each piece of the episode will be released once a week for three weeks.
There’s going to be a bit of a delay while we organize things, but this time, we’re going to shoot 6-8 episodes all at once, and when we start releasing again, it’ll be regular, just like normal TV. :)
Thanks for watching!
Earl and Matt. You guys rock. Your work is growing up and getting more polished with each project. Every thing has improved with episode 4. I want more.
look’n good
I’m enjoying the episodes. Looking forward to the upcoming ones! Great job to Cari Moscow!
Awesome as always, Great work Earl!
Dug it. Verra cool.
Matt, you’re a freakn’ genius.
Wow. Just...wow.
Beautiful.
How can I put this???? WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW...... did I mention WOW… Holy crap, What was your budget for this episode??? I am amazed.... This is hands down the best show on the internet and even better than many shows on broadcast tv with way more budget. Only Lindsay Campbell beats you, and that is just because she is so cute and witty, www.moblogic.tv , that’s her site if you’ve never seen it. Anyway, congratulations to the crew of strangerthings.tv AWSOME job and keep it up.
I concur.
Awesome story and production. Thanks. You can view more of Matt Wallace at www.truckerrich.com
excellent!!! Better than anything I’ve seen on cable or network tv.
Excellent work!
I see you finally found the right d.p.
Dayum! How do you do this? The production value is superb, the acting excellent and the story fascinating. I have seen many privately financed projects, made by people with ambition, good ideas and even some money but you beat them all ... actually, they are not even playing in your league.
It is even more fascinating if you consider that you surpass even TV productions. It makes me weep for all the money squandered for series and movies that would be far better put into your projects. You do not happen to be a bunch well-paid professionals, using this as some kind of pastime project?
Of course, I do not want to indulge in mindless flattery. We all know that there are certainly things to be improved, but, again: Dayum!
I like what I see of you so far. But many things are taken at face value, all do in time I would like to get to know you from seeing you.My name is Sean by the way its always nice to know that you may have friends.
I cant stop watching your vids, there too awsome!!!
I love these episodes, well done!
I love these episodes, well done!
stranger things
Hi Earl this is your Mom’s Friend and co-worker...I tried to download the pdf but it says it is damaged...thought you would want to know....just love all the episodes I have seen so far! Congratulations!
Blessings
Laura
Guys, you have improved greatly with this episode four, finally you deserve an oscar, keep it up
Much better that Alfred Hitchcock. Spellbinding!
This is my favorite . Nothing comes closer to capturing the other side. 5 stars here!
As a colleague of Earl Newton as well as always interested in “Behind the Scene” info about the filmmaking process, I really appreciate this informative interview about how adaptation of the story into the film. Great interview, great story, looking forward to listeniing and watching more!
How about putting this on revver? My comp isn’t allowing me to view it for some reason
It’ll be up in just a bit, there was some kind of glitch uploading an M4V file. Should be good to go soon.
Dear Earl,
How awesome thou art.
Love, love,
A raffia fan.
This was, by far, my favorite episode of Stranger Things. Earl Newton is coming in to his own and apparently become a master of efficient productions and visual storytelling. From top to bottom, this thing was amazing.
I believe this is the best so far. Top notch! I’m going to tell all my friends.
Great concept, partly unrealistic (meaning the party the youngsters gathered to watch the same show, it is not done like that even today, let alone in the future, probably every kid would sit hoe alone just connected) but still great concept.
Thank you.
this was pretty good. i am a christian and i still enjoyed it thoroughly.
I just noticed, he had a Georgia ID. Heh.
This is a pretty good storyline and a great development.
You guys, this was so awesome, and creepy. Nice job.
I don’t get the ending. Perhaps I missed some foreshadowing that you-know-who would be able to do you-know-what because I don’t understand how so-and-so is hanging out with those people at the end or why they’d even want to.
I don’t make films,or know anything about the particulars of working written works into a visual format.I do know when it’s good, really excellently good I am inside the story watching. Close enough to be splashed by the blood,You hear nothing else. You see nothing else. You FEEL every emotion with them. You gasp in surprise. You jump back startled.
It takes awesome talent to make that happen.
Thank you for some exciting trips!! Bravo!
To Earl & co:
Really nice, professional job and a good story as well! It could be a real TV show (if you interrupt it every 5 minutes with 4 minutes of commercials, dumb it down a tad, remove religious references and add a relentless laugh track). Thanks for being on the internet!
Spoiler Alert!
@ Zeus.
He took all of her pain and suffering and put it all in a drawer away from the family. She said it would be a better place and it ended up just like that for her family.
Hopefully, Kalypso will travel around bettering lives of those who need it and not gangsters.
Good work, I stumbled upon your site and I’m loving this I’m a motion graphics artist and I have to say I’m inspired by your effects and your films. Put these in theaters before a movie starts with the trailers.
Thanks Earl for the new resources, yes, resources for me, as an aspiring director and a film maker in Nigeria, I find stranger things a kind of a library and reference point where none doesn’t exist, more film reel to you camera
I really enjoyed this one. Good acting, professional filming nice pacing on a good to the point of being true, story. 2 nits? Repetition of the diagnostic program (slowed it down- even if a cool graphic scene) and her kissing him at the end (made it a fictional unrealistic story). Its already kind of true in medicine as rules do already trump people’s pain, people’s lives.
Greeaaat episode! God, this is so creepy.
Wonderfully creepy! Well done!
nice story… great job… prefer this kind of films than those big budget nonsense films.
I just stumbled on your site tonight after listening to Scott Sigler and I enjoyed first episode in the series, but I LOVED this episode so much. I featured them both on my site (http://raad.wordpress.com/2010/11/12/stranger-things-series-sins-of-the-mother-and-sacred-cow/).
I think you should add to each episode page a link to go right to the next and previous episode to make it even easier to keep watching.
Love it and keep up the great work!
Dany
Wow...terrific! After years of picturing Peter Cushing as Listen I couldn’t even fathom anyone else, but Toby Turner was fantastic. I found the site through Gary Braunbeck’s To Each Their Darkness, and everything he said about it was true...very impressive work!
I know I’m four years late to the game, but I recently hunted this episode down because of Toby Turner. At first I only wanted to watch because he was in it, but as I watched it I fell in love with Gordo. The character was adorable!
Sure there were obvious flaws, but the amazing parts overshadow those few slips by a million times. During the entire last seven minutes of the episode my jaw was dropped, hands cupped over my mouth and I was saying “No no no no no no no no nonononono. Oh my God Oh My GOD” on repeat. Very good job by all of you. I think I’ll be watching the rest.
Once again, amazing episode! Acting was great! Toby Turner was amazing as Listen. At the end I was like “Wait, what? What? WHAT?!” And then I had a huge goofy smile. :)
This is very creepy. I enjoyed it so much. You’re lucky you have Toby “Tobuscus” Turner as a cast member. Because of him I’m here and now I love this series. I want to see more. This should me put on TV and it should be 1 hour long.
Very good and I love how it was made. Great storyline and it sure adds a mystery to most religion. In a creepy sense how it was going on for years in ancient civilization and how places of worships building design contribute to this.
I would rather see films like this in theaters than most action movies.Excellent work!!
this is incredible… an toby turner is soooo awesome !
TOBUSCUS!!!!
TOBUSCUS!
I thought there were definite things I liked about this, there was a good thrill when they mentioned that the priest was excommunicated. Unfortunately I didn’t like the way that they did just want to kill the things straight away. People fear what they do not understand, but this just says, whatever we don’t understand, must die.
I liked how it was short and sweet. I actually thought Toby was better once he became the creepy bad guy, he just seems to play a bad guy really well. The main priest was a good actor. Kudos.
Editing felt a little ‘high school’ to me.
After watching Toby Turner on YouTube for so long with his fun, free personality, I found his acting skills here to be so very good. The story for the episode is very well done.
i watched it because of Toby....
I like the story and the characters very much, but the flow of the video itself was a bit, “jerky” for a lack of a better word. If you would have shot this in black and white, I think it would have flowed smoother. This is just my opinion and I thoroughly enjoyed the video.
It’s so weird seeing Toby act so serious...like, when I watched his BlackBox one as well, I was totally bloiwn away by how awesome he was <3 He needs to do more! MORE! MORRRRRE!
PEOPLE NEED TO STOP BEING SO CRITICAL! This is not an actual movie or something. Considering their timeframe and budget it was great!
And contrary to popular belief, Toby was AWESOME. You need him in ALL OF YOUR VIDS! It’s weird seeing Toby so serious, I love it <3 He’s even hotter (anyone seen This One’s For You, Baby? Oh. My. Gosh.)
